Uber Freight
Uber Freight is a digital platform by Uber that connects shippers (businesses needing to move goods) with carriers (truck drivers or freight companies). It streamlines logistics operations, reduces inefficiencies, and enhances transparency across the supply chain.
The What & The How
Pain Point
The freight industry struggles with empty miles trucks running underloaded or empty, leading to wasted fuel, higher costs, and lower driver earnings.
In 2023, 43% of shippers reported sending partially empty trucks, with 55% unused space on average.
Solution
An AI-powered system that calculates optimal routes, handles multiple stops, consolidates shipments, and maximizes truck capacity reducing empty miles and lowering costs.
Solution Prototype
A subtle in-app popup introduces a new toggle that enhances search mode without disrupting familiar flows.
01

This screen supports multi-shipment creation, enabling users to add and manage multiple shipments in one streamlined flow.
Each shipment is organized in tabs for easy navigation, with consistent input fields that help maintain clarity and speed throughout the process
02

This screen allows users to review and compare optimized shipment routes based on their delivery priorities.
Each shipment is displayed in a card with the option to delete a truck if needed. A map preview offers a visual overview of the routes, while a summary bar at the bottom
03

We streamlined the original appointment confirmation screen by combining timing and shipment details into a clear, compact view.
Information entered earlier updates automatically, and users can fill in any missing fields before confirming and booking the shipment.

Design Drafts, Concepts & User Testing
In this prototype, we initially tested the multi-drop-off concept. It allows the user to add multiple drop-off points for a single shipment, streamlining the process of managing multiple destinations.
As the shipper enters key details like distances and weight, the system updates the information in real time. This approach helps reduce costs by optimizing routes, minimizing empty trucks, and enhancing the overall efficiency of the shipment process.

We initially considered a button for adding a drop-off point due to its intuitiveness, familiarity, and clear action. However, we chose a toggle for its ability to:
-
Not affect users not using multi-shipment.
-
Fit the shipper's process with all details in one view.
-
Enable seamless data input without page switching.
-
Simplify the process to minimize mistakes.
-
Show only relevant information to reduce clutter.

We considered two options for managing tabs:
-
Collapsible Tabs: Only one tab is open at a time, and the next opens automatically once the user saves, keeping the user focused and minimizing errors.
-
Top Navigation Tabs: No scrolling required, but introduces a new component.
Ultimately, we chose collapsible tabs for their familiarity, which reduces learning time and saves development effort.

We decided to drop the multi-drop concept, as it required users to complete all shipment details before receiving accurate feedback, leading to unnecessary back-and-forth and delaying quick quotes. Additionally, it didn’t necessarily solve the core issue of empty trucks.
